Do you approve a board raise?

On 2/8/21, our Supervisor, Clerk and Treasurer voted to increase their own salaries by 2.5%:

This is worrisome for several reasons…

ZERO CITIZEN INPUT & NO ELECTOR VOTE

Our Board cancelled last year’s annual township meeting.

Then, without the approval of electors, they increased our Clerk’s wage by 10.8%.

This raise was supposed to be a “one-time arrangement” in 2020 and has not been reset.

EXCESSIVE COMPENSATION

Our Supervisor, Clerk and Treasurer’s compensation exceeds the county median by 77-133%.

Neither the U.S. cost-of-living adjustment (1.3%) nor the MI tax commission’s inflation rate multiplier (1.4%) have been used as a benchmark.

HIGHEST COUNTY FRINGE BENEFITS

Leland Township’s fringe benefits are 51-77% higher than other townships.

Neither Bingham, Centerville nor Glen Arbor pay pension.

Only Elmwood, Leelanau and Leland Townships offer medical insurance.

HOW IS THIS FAIR?

Leland Township salaries have outpaced federal and state indexes applied to electors…

…and thanks to Covid-19, many residents are struggling to pay bills in a pandemic economy.

Our Board shouldn’t be setting their own salaries…

…they need oversight & benchmarking.
